The testing grounds are made up of multiple areas, including:

Las Vegas was significantly impacted by nuclear fallout from the more than 1,000 atmospheric and underground nuclear tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site from 1951 to 1992. While the city itself was a tourist destination for these tests during the "atomic age," radioactive particles were carried by wind patterns, contaminating areas far beyond the site and leading to long-term health issues for residents and communities in the Western U.S. 

Historical context

• Nevada Test Site: 
Located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, this site was the location for the majority of the U.S.'s nuclear weapons testing. 

• Atmospheric testing: 
Between 1951 and 1962, atmospheric tests released radioactive particles into the air, which were then carried by prevailing winds to nearby communities, including southern Nevada, northern Arizona, and southern Utah. 

• Underground testing: 
Following a 1962 treaty, testing shifted underground. Although these tests were contained, they still dispersed massive amounts of radioactive particles and some contamination. 

Impacts of fallout

• Health effects: 
Fallout exposed residents to radioactive isotopes, such as iodine-131, which can collect in the thyroid gland and increase cancer rates over time. 

• Contamination: 
Radioactive particles settled on the land, contaminated water sources and crops, and entered people's homes. 

• "Downwinders": 
Communities located downwind of the test site became known as "Downwinders" and are eligible for compensation from the federal government for illnesses linked to their exposure to radiation. 

Las Vegas "atomic age" tourism

• During the 1950s, Las Vegas, marketed itself as the "Atomic City". 

• Businesses created "atomic cocktails" and hosted "blast viewing parties" atop hotels to capitalize on the tests.
